Cactus Bowl #2 - Small
I make my cactus bowls on the potter's wheel using a speckled buff clay after which I paint a layer of white clay slip to create a blank canvas. Once the clay reaches a leather hard stage I paint on the cactus designs using underglazes and then carve in the details of the cactus. The piece is then fired to make it ceramic. After this first firing, I apply a black underglaze on top of all the designs and wipe down the piece leaving the underglaze inside all the carved spaces. Finally, all the areas with slip and underglaze are painted with a clear food safe underglaze and fired to cone 5 in my electric kiln. The lip and foot of the bowl are left raw and sanded to a buttery smooth texture.
These bowls are both dishwasher and microwave safe.
